Built Environment Accessibility Assessment — 76 Federal Crown Corporation Facilities Nationwide
76 buildings. Four-plus provinces. One consistent assessment methodology applied from the first facility to the last.
Project Overview
A national federal Crown corporation engaged Accessibility Partners to assess the physical accessibility of its public-service facilities from coast to coast. The scope covered 76 buildings across more than four provinces making this one of the largest built environment accessibility engagements we have undertaken in Canada.
Thousands of Canadians visit these facilities daily, including people with mobility impairments, vision loss, hearing loss, and cognitive disabilities. Many of the buildings had been constructed under older building codes that did not reflect current accessibility expectations.
The Built Environment Assessment Challenge
The scale of the engagement created a consistency problem. With 76 locations assessed by field teams operating across multiple provinces, there was a real risk of findings that were difficult to compare or consolidate at the portfolio level. The client also needed remediation roadmaps that would integrate with existing capital planning processes not standalone reports that sat outside their facilities management workflows.
Our Built Environment Assessment Approach
We developed a standardised assessment methodology before deploying to the first site, ensuring that findings would be directly comparable across every location. Field teams assessed each facility against applicable federal and provincial standards, covering entrances, interior circulation, service counters, washrooms, parking, signage, and emergency egress.
For each building, we delivered a prioritised remediation report distinguishing immediate safety concerns from short-term improvements and long-term capital planning items. Reports were structured to align directly with the client’s existing facilities management and capital planning processes.

Every engagement we take on is led by a credentialed senior consultant — not delegated to junior staff after the proposal is signed. We hold Government of Canada Standing Offer #1 national ranking, $5M errors and omissions insurance, and twelve years of experience across federal, provincial, municipal, and private-sector clients.
If your organisation manages a large facilities portfolio and needs a consistent, scalable assessment approach, we would welcome the conversation.
Frequently Asked Questions
+
What standards do you use when assessing federal Crown corporation facilities in Canada?
Assessments are typically based on the Accessible Canada Act, applicable provincial requirements, and barrier-free design standards such as CSA B651.
+
How do you keep assessment findings consistent across 76 buildings in multiple provinces?
We use one standardized assessment methodology across all locations to ensure findings remain consistent and comparable.
+
How are remediation roadmaps structured to fit into existing capital planning processes?
Reports separate urgent barriers from long-term improvements so organisations can align accessibility work with existing budgets and planning cycles.
+
How do you prioritise findings across a large multi-site built environment assessment?
Findings are prioritised based on safety risk, user impact, and implementation complexity.
